Arthur Miller // "I think the job of the artist is to remind people of what they have chosen to forget."

James Baldwin // "Though we do not wholly believe it yet, the interior life is a real life, and the intangible dreams of people have a tangible effect on the world."

Joan Didion // "I want you to know, as you read me, precisely who I am and where I am and what is on my mind. I want you to understand exactly what you are getting: you are getting a woman who for some time now has felt radically separated from most of the ideas that seem to interest people. You are getting a woman who, somewhere along the line, misplaced whatever slight faith she ever had in the social contract...in the whole grand pattern of human endeavor."

Marianne Faithfull // "I’ve got to where I’ve always wanted to be. I just feel more myself…and I’ve learned not to care what other people think. It’s happened slowly, very slowly… But I did it."

Nina Simone // "I have to constantly re-identify myself to myself, reactivate my own standards, my own convictions about what I’m doing and why."

Photo of Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki // "In my grandparents’ time, it was believed that spirits existed everywhere...in trees, rivers, insects, wells, anything... I like the idea that we should all treasure everything because spirits might exist there, and we should treasure everything because there is a kind of life to everything."

Photo of Edward Abbey

Edward Abbey // "My loyalties will not be bound by national borders, or confined in time by one nation’s history, or limited in the spiritual dimension by one language and culture. I pledge my allegiance to the damned human race, and my everlasting love to the green hills of Earth, and my intimations of glory to the singing stars, to the very end of space and time."

Bob Dylan // "I wanted to understand things and then be free of them. I needed to learn how to telescope things, ideas. Things were too big to see all at once, like all the books in the library...everything laying around on all the tables. You might be able to put it all into one paragraph or into one verse of a song if you could get it right."

Photo of Andrei Tarkovsky

Andrei Tarkovsky // "When I speak of poetry I am not thinking of it as a genre. Poetry is an awareness of the world, a particular way of relating to reality."

Frida Kahlo // "At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can."

Martin Luther King Jr. // "An individual has not begun to live until he can rise above the narrow horizons of his particular individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity. This is one of the big problems of life, that so many people never quite get to the point of rising above self...so they end up the tragic victims of self-centeredness. They are the people who live an eternal 'I' ...They start out, the minute you talk with them, talking about what they can do, what they have done...where they have been...who they know....and how much money they have. Now, we can say to a certain extent that persons in this situation are persons who have really never grown up... For you see, a child is inevitably, necessarily egocentric. He is a bundle of his own sensations, clamoring to be cared for... When people become mature, they are to rise above this. When one matures...he turns himself to higher loyalties. He gives himself to something outside of himself. He gives himself to causes that he lives for and sometimes will even die for. He comes to the point that now he can rise above his individualistic concerns. And so you see people who are apparently selfish; it isn’t merely an ethical issue but it is a psychological issue. They are the victims of arrested development…they are still children. They haven’t grown up… You conquer self-centeredness by coming to the point of seeing that you are where you are today because somebody helped you to get there... No matter where you stand, no matter how much popularity you have, no matter how much education you have, no matter how much money you have, you have it because somebody in this universe helped you to get it… You have your position because of the events of history and because of individuals in the background making it possible for you to stand there."
